The originator is Lourdes Paz Reyes. He and other supporters of the ban say that Mexico is flooded with cheap alcohol. They want the city authorities to prohibit the sale of cold beer to fight excessive consumption. The idea aroused the residents’ weariness.
This is not about a total ban on selling, and about turning off the refrigerators that cool the beer. The average annual air temperature in the Mexican capital is 18 ° C, and cold beer is a way of tolerating hot weather for many people. They buy them much more often than water or other sodas. The creators of the idea believe that if the beer is warm, residents of the capital will stop drinking it. Stores would also be obliged to put warning signs informing about the mandates for public consumption of alcohol.
Lourdes Paz Reyes argues that one of the government polls showed that as much as 75.8 percent. inhabitants of Mexico City considers consumption of alcohol in public space as the largest source of criminal and anti-social behavior. The problem is that prohibiting cold beer also does not seem to them a solution.
“It’s unbelievable that our legislators think about such foolishness, at the same time forgetting about real social problems” – such a statement of one of the opponents of the idea can be read in The Guardian
Ever since Reyes published his idea, the inhabitants of Mexico City began massively taking pictures of alcohol in public space, signing them in social media with a hashtag #ConLasCervezasNo (Don’t mess with our beers). It is not known whether the city authorities will decide on this step, but it is very likely that it will be difficult to apply this law.
I stand in solidarity with the people of Mexico City as they fight for their right to cold beer. Grab a caguama and join me! #ConLasCervezasNo #DontMessWithOurBeer pic.twitter.com/GZsv3h78CR
