The combination of active rest and care for the natural environment does not have to be complicated. The Danish GreenKayak non-governmental organization offers the possibility of renting a kayak free of charge in exchange for collecting trash floating on the water. There are currently eight locations available in Denmark, Germany, Norway and Ireland.
Kayaks are a great tool for collecting garbage found in rivers and lakes, because thanks to them you can get closer to areas that are difficult to access. What’s more, they are for two people and are very stable, and previous experience in kayaking is not necessary. Of course, volunteers receive life jackets and waste collection equipment. Thanks to GreenKayak over the past two years, several thousand volunteers have collected more than 10 tons of rubbish in total. Canoes can be rented free of charge for two hours in the summer season.
You must book your date in advance via the GreenKayak website. Persons renting a kayak must be able to swim, and at least one of them must be at least 18 years of age. There are eight locations available – Aalborg, Aarhus, Copenhagen, Odense and Præstø in Denmark, Hamburg in Germany, Dublin in Ireland and Bergen in Norway.
