On Thursday (April 25), UN Security Council deliberations will be held. The debate will focus on Russia’s demarcation of the simplified procedure of granting Russian citizenship to the inhabitants of the Ukrainian Donbass. President Wołodymyr Zełenski: It is a confirmation that Russia is an aggressor.
On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree that simplifies obtaining citizenship of his country by the inhabitants of the self-proclaimed popular republics, formed by pro-Russian separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern Ukraine. The actions of the Russian authorities were condemned both by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and by Volodymyr Zełenski.
Poroshenko declared that the Kremlin violates international law ,. He also called for strengthening sanctions against Russia. According to the president, this decision is an admission of the Russian side to being an occupant.
“These actions are another eye-witness for the world community of the true role of Russia as an aggressor’s country that wages war against Ukraine,” was Zelezsky’s statement.
The Russian daily “Kommersant” previously wrote about the possibility of Russia taking such a step shortly after the presidential election in Ukraine. According to the document published on the Kremlin website, “persons permanently living in the territories of the particular regions of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts have the right to apply for granting citizenship of the Russian Federation in a simplified manner”. The citizens of Donbas will be able to submit their applications to the territorial authorities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, and the list of these bodies will be announced. Vladimir Putin claims that a new law was created to defend the rights and freedoms of man and citizen in this region. However, the Ukrainian authorities have no illusions about its true intentions.
