Wild deer on the street? Only in Trincomalee City (Sri Lanka)

Kamil Kuchta 2. March 2019

Trincomalee is a Tamil city on the east coast of Sri Lanka. There are several interesting temples, a historic Dutch fort, a white beach, turquoise ocean and tamed wild deer. They are the biggest attraction.

Trincomalee is one of the port cities in the north-east of Sri Lanka. The name of the city derives from the Tamil language “Thiru-kona-malai”, which means the Holy Eastern Hill. Trinco (the locals often call it that way) is quite well-known for its beautiful beaches, although there are many other beaches in Sri Lanka that are impressive.

Aksis Deer are the most common representatives of deer in India, Sri Lanka and the Himalayas. In India, you can only meet them in reservations. They live here in the city, even in the historic Federick fort. When it gets darker they move even closer to the center, you can meet them at the bus station and on the main streets. They are not afraid of people and they let you feed yourself. Out of concern for their health, it is forbidden to throw away plastic bags in some parts of the city. Unfortunately, the Lankijczycy love plastic. They use it much more willingly than Europeans and even put the smallest thing in a plastic bag.

Trincomalee is also a famous place in Sri Lanka, where you can watch whales. The season runs from March 15 to November 15. Unfortunately, we are not sure that we will see them. Tour operators rate a 50% chance, but it is probably less.

Fort of many owners

The most famous place in this city is the Portuguese fort. In 1665, it was demolished and then rebuilt by the Dutch. The building has an important strategic position, so it often changed its owners. Later, the French took over the fortification, and later the British. They gave him the final shape and name of Fort Frederick. Nowadays, the island is independent and a garrison of the Sri Lanka Army is stationed here. Inside the fort there are several old buildings that can be visited. However, tourists come there mainly to see the deer and a beautiful view from the walls of the fort
